Krk Sights, Excursions, and Culinary Experiences

January 14, 2022

The island of Krk with its eponymous town in the Kvarner Bay is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Croatia. In addition to Krk's sights, there are also many outdoor activities you can undertake here. Events and many local gourmet specialties round off Krk's attractions.

Attractive Capital Krk

In the town of Krk, you will encounter historical flair and can admire monuments and buildings during walks through the old town, which are among the most famous Krk sights. There is bustling activity along the popular waterfront promenade and at the harbor as well as in the city center, where the Vela placa invites you to shop, stroll, and marvel.

In the many cafes and restaurants, you can taste the delicious local cuisine, especially the lamb and the goulash with Surlice noodles are popular here. A local wine from the well-known Vrnik wine-growing region always pairs well with these dishes.

Other Krk Sights:

However, the island can offer many other attractions that are not limited to the capital. You can best get to know these during excursions to the surrounding villages – or you can choose one of our popular "Crovillas" as accommodation in the preferred area.

Krk's Sights: Unique Flora and Fauna Across the Entire Island

In the capital city of Krk, you will find many of the most famous Krk sights. However, the fantastic weather with around 2500 hours of sunshine per year can be enjoyed across the entire island.

Flora and Fauna

Here, over 1400 plant species grow, which you can admire on excursions along the more than 300 km of cycling and hiking trails on the island. Particularly noteworthy is the woodruff "Barbašova lazarkinja," which only grows in the bay of Baska and is one of Krk's botanical attractions.

Krk's unique attraction is the healing mud from the Klimno Bay in the west of Krk, which is said to help with gout. Another Krk attraction is the ornithological reserve on the island of Prvic in the northeast, where the rare white-headed eagle lives.

Krk's Sights in the Capital:

Especially in the old town, you will encounter many Krk sights. The capital is dominated by the cathedral, which, along with the Franciscan fortress, is one of the island's highlights. The historic old town allows visitors to immerse themselves in ancient times. The special hospitality and the many attractions, as well as excursion opportunities, activities, and restaurants, are a magnet for tourists.

Here are some must-see sights:

  • The old town hall at Vela Placa
  • The Frankopan family's castle on Kamplin Square, including the courtroom, towers, and fortress walls.
  • The bell tower of the Krk Cathedral from the 16th century (a landmark of Krk)
  • The cathedral and the Church of St. Quirinus
  • There are many galleries and museums here, where exhibitions by Croatian artists can be viewed.

Krk Sights – Found All Over the Island

If you want to explore the island from the capital, you will find more Krk sights in the following places:

  • Punat with the remains of early prehistoric settlement traces of the Romans and Greeks, as well as the historic Franciscan monastery on the island of Kosljun.
  • Silo in the east offers a special Krk attraction: a diving excursion to the sunken Greek ship Peltastis. Additionally, the Roko processions traditionally take place here in Silo in honor of Saint Roko, who saved the inhabitants from the plague.
  • Klimno. Here stands the well-known chapel dedicated to Saint Clement.
  • Omnisalj. Here you will find the Lapidarium, a stone monument collection. Particularly interesting for visitors are the historic Church of the Assumption of Mary from the 12th century, the ruins of the early Christian basilica, and the Dubec forest park.

The most famous Krk sights and the most popular tourist spots on the island are also the locations of our most sought-after villas.

Our three favorite places with the most interesting Krk sights are:

  • Dobrinj – The municipality is actually a medieval fortress. Here you will find historic buildings such as the parish church of Saint Stephen and various folklore events. Tourists are particularly enthusiastic about visiting the former pirate cave Biserujka, which is the only one of over 50 caves accessible to visitors.
  • Malinska is an important tourist hub. Notable archaeological sights include the early Christian church complex in the forest area "Cickini" or the nearby fishing village of Porat, as well as the Franciscan monastery with its museum and many folk-historical and sacred exhibits. Here you will also find the Church of Saint Mary Magdalene.
  • Vrnik. This oldest place on the island is situated high above the sea on the rock. Tourists come mainly for the delicious food and wine tastings in this place.
