See and Experience Split's Sights – Sightseeing with Outdoor Activities

Split's sights are not limited to the enchanting city itself but can also be found in the surrounding area. Therefore, you can experience the beautiful landscape through the following outdoor activities:

  • Discover the surroundings on horseback, for example, on a ride along the old Roman roads near Podstrana.
  • Hiking or cycling in the Marjan Park recreational area with its many viewpoints over the harbor and bay.
  • Strolling along the Riva Harbor promenade with its yachts. The many street cafes offer refreshments, and nearby are Marjan Hill with its park, the Diocletian's Palace, and the Franciscan Monastery.
  • Swimming or sunbathing at the popular Kansuni Beach or Bene Beach.
  • A leisurely walk through the historic old town of Split.

Admire Split's Historical Sights

If you are interested in the exciting history of the unofficial capital of Dalmatia, you will be thrilled by the many historical buildings and monuments. They are among Split's sights that you should not miss! Especially the atmosphere in the historic old town, which, along with the Diocletian's Palace, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is not to be missed.

Split's sights include many buildings and structures around the Diocletian's Palace, which was built around the year 300 and from which the city developed:

  • The Peristyle (the colonnaded courtyard)
  • The network of corridors or cellars (Podrumi) under the palace
  • The Vestibule (the entrance hall of the imperial palace chambers)
  • The former Temple of Jupiter, now the Baptistery of St. John
  • The Papalić Palace with the City Museum
  • The Cathedral (the former Diocletian's Mausoleum)
  • The four entrances to the old town: the Sea Gate (bronze gate), as well as the Golden, Silver, and Iron Gates. At the Golden Gate, you can also admire the statue of Gregory of Nin.

You should allow plenty of time just to explore the surroundings of the palace and the old town.

Other exciting Split sights include:

  • The old town hall with the nearby Pjaca Square (People's Square), the old city clock, and the art gallery
  • The Poljud Stadium and the multipurpose hall
  • The Archbishop's Palace
  • The Marjan Park, which houses various chapels and an old Jewish cemetery
  • The old Venetian fortress Gripe
  • The former governor's residence
  • The Fruit Square (former fruit market, Vocni trg) with other sights such as the Venetian tower, the Milesi Palace, or the statue of Marko Marulić.

If you are a fan of old churches and monasteries, you have a particularly large selection here, not just in Marjan Park. Split's sights, when it comes to churches and monasteries, also include the Cathedral of St. Domnius, the Franciscan Monastery, the Church of St. Mary, or the Church of St. Philip Neri.

Many of Split's sights can also be found in the countless museums and galleries. These include, for example, the Archaeological Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, or the Croatian Maritime Museum.

In addition to the many historical features and the incredible landscape, which you can explore and admire through outdoor activities directly in Split, the surrounding area of Split has even more to offer. It is best to combine your stay with a day trip to Split's sights.

Depending on how far you want to venture from Split, you can also discover sights outside of Split. How about a trip to the ruined city of Salona, about 5 km away? Here you can admire the ancient open-air museum with the still well-preserved amphitheater.

  • A bit further away (about 14 km) you will find the famous Klis Fortress, which may look familiar to you – some scenes for the series Game of Thrones were filmed here.
  • In the surrounding area, you will also find other beautiful destinations such as
  • The port city of Šibenik with old fortresses and a cathedral
  • The Krka National Park with its famous waterfalls, which is suitable for a trip during an adventure holiday
  • The historic town of Trogir
  • The former fishing village of Primošten with its romantic old town and popular beaches
